When it comes to buying cosmetics, there are certain products I like to splurge on and others that I am comfortable buying at my local drugstore. Mascara is one of the products that for years I have bought when shopping at CVS or Target. My favorite is The Colossal Volum’ Express by Maybelline in classic black which runs about $7.00. Since my lashes are lighter in color and not very thick, I prefer a mascara that adds volume over length. Throughout the time that I have been wearing this mascara, I have received several compliments on my lashes so I like to assume it is doing the job.
About a month ago, I was in Ulta researching new cosmetic items when I stumbled across a huge display for “they’re real!” mascara by Benefit ($23.00). The salesgirl saw me looking at the display and made a comment on how that product is one of their best sellers in the store. Now if you have ever been in Ulta, you know that they carry thousands and thousands of beauty products. So this salesgirl was making a pretty bold statement by saying that this mascara is a best seller. As she continued on about why she loved this product, my inner self was starting to feel like maybe I had been missing out all of these years by buying my $7.00 mascara. I had to try it.
After using “they’re real” by Benefit for a few weeks, I can see why this has become a best selling product. My favorite thing about this mascara is the wand. It is great at separating your lashes and the tip of the brush is shaped in a way that makes it easier to get to those harder to reach little lashes. It doesn’t clump, run or smear on your eyelids after a long day. It is not waterproof but I would say it is water resistant. It is tricky to remove, not as difficult as waterproof, so make sure you are using a good eye makeup remover.
So it comes down to this, is it worth spending the extra money on mascara? I am now a fan of both mascaras and think that I will be keeping both in my make up bag. I will use The Colossal Volum’ Express by Maybelline for my everyday mascara and use “they’re real” by Benefit for nights out and for events that would normally require a waterproof mascara.
