“A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.”  Coco Chanel

Since I have started Making Over Momma, it seems that the biggest concern my readers have is how to dress age appropriate.  As one reader wrote to me, “…I feel like certain outfits make me look like I am trying too hard to look younger, but yet I want to avoid frumpy, ‘soccer mom’ outfits..”  Another woman commented to me, “I had a milestone birthday this year and wondering if I’m too ‘old’ to wear some of these trends.”    After having children, it can be a struggle to reconnect with your personal style and figuring out how current trends work into your new lifestyle.  Not to mention, after what our bodies have been through, things don’t tend to fit as we remember.  In the coming weeks, I will give you tips on different ways to update your style for your current age.

I find beginning with a solid foundation of great fitting classics is a good place to start, such as, sexy jeans, black dress pants, a little black dress, a crisp white shirt,  a waist length blazer or little jacket,a trench coat, and a longer length sweater.  When considering these wardrobe building pieces, you want to buy for quality because they are going to be worn often.  You also want to consider your fit.  Many times as women, we get hung up on a “number”.  That size 6, 8 or 10 may not fit like it used to.  It is okay to go up a size, no one has to know.  You can always cut out the tag if it bothers you, don’t tell anyone but I have.  When your clothes fit better, you aren’t going to see a lot of those bumps, bulges and wrinkles that bug you when you look in the mirror.  If you stick with traditional styling, you will be able to keep these items around for many years.

Once you have established your base, now is the time to add in the fun stuff.  The trend inspired pieces are going to add some “pop” to your wardrobe and to keep you feeling young.  Keep in mind that not every trend is going to work for every woman.  You need to consider your age as well as your body type and your lifestyle.  As we age, we want to keep these trends tasteful.  For example, how would you incorporate the craze of neon pink that is around.  By adding a fun hot pink skinny belt and a bracelet to your classic foundation you have touched on the trend, without looking like you are trying too hard.  Handbags, shoes, jewelry, belts, scarves are all great ways to play with a trend without worrying that you have taken it too far.  When you pull your look together, you should feel stylish, polished and sexy which will ultimately build your confidence.
